Category: IP and Core Protocols

Description: Defines managed objects for ICMPv6 entities, providing management and monitoring of Internet Control Message Protocol operations over IPv6.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring IPV6-ICMP-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is IPV6-ICMP-MIB?

IPV6-ICMP-MIB is an IETF standards-track MIB, originally published as RFC 2466 and now formally marked obsolete in favor of the revised IP-MIB (RFC 4293), that was intended to expose per-interface ICMPv6 statistics for entities implementing ICMPv6. Its single ipv6IfIcmpTable (AUGMENTS ipv6IfEntry from IPV6-MIB) defined per-interface counters such as ipv6IfIcmpInMsgs, ipv6IfIcmpInErrors, ipv6IfIcmpInDestUnreachs, ipv6IfIcmpInTimeExcds, ipv6IfIcmpInEchos/EchoReplies, and router solicitation/advertisement counts, but the module itself notes this table was deprecated because implementations were found not to actually maintain these statistics on a per-interface basis. Despite its obsolete status, the module remains relevant as a historical/compatibility reference for tools or agents that still implement it, and for understanding the object naming that IP-MIB's icmpStatsTable/icmpMsgStatsTable later replaced with global and per-type ICMPv6 counters. It depends on IPV6-MIB for the ipv6IfEntry table it augments, and is not tied to any specific vendor's hardware since it is a pure IETF specification; administrators researching legacy SNMP agents may still consult the IPV6-ICMP-MIB RFC when an older device reports these OIDs instead of the current IP-MIB equivalents.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IPV6-ICMP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (RFC 2466, obsoleted by RFC 4293), not tied to a specific manufacturer

Monitoring Examples

An operator investigating why an older router's per-interface ICMPv6 echo counters never increment discovers that ipv6IfIcmpTable was marked obsolete in this MIB because vendors never maintained it per-interface, and switches to polling IP-MIB's icmpStatsTable instead for equivalent global ICMPv6 statistics.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-interface ICMPv6 message counters (in/out)
  • ICMPv6 error counters (destination unreachable, time exceeded, parameter problem)
  • ICMPv6 echo request/reply counters
  • router solicitation/advertisement counters

RFC description

SNMP MIB defined in RFC 2466 for managing ICMPv6 (Internet Control Message Protocol version 6) statistics including per-interface counters for echo, errors, and neighbor discovery messages; obsoleted by RFC 4293 IP-MIB.
