Description: Provides managed objects for GRE and IP-IP tunnel interface configuration and statistics on Juniper Networks E-series routers.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Juniper-IP-TUNNEL-MIB?

This is a Juniper Networks enterprise MIB module that manages IP tunnel interfaces, specifically GRE (Generic Routing Encapsulation) and IP-in-IP tunnels, on Juniper E-series routers. It exposes configuration data such as tunnel mode, source and destination addresses, MTU, checksum settings, and the virtual router association for each tunnel interface. Rather than hardware health, this MIB is primarily used to monitor the operational configuration state of tunnel interfaces—whether a tunnel's row status is active, its assigned MTU, and whether checksumming is enabled—so administrators can confirm tunnels are correctly provisioned and detect misconfiguration. It builds on standard IF-MIB conventions by assigning an ifIndex to each tunnel interface, tying tunnel management into the broader interfaces MIB framework. It is typically deployed in service-provider or enterprise networks running Juniper E-series edge routers that terminate GRE or IP-IP tunnels for VPN or traffic-engineering purposes. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the Juniper-IP-TUNNEL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Juniper-IP-TUNNEL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Juniper Networks E-series routers

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll juniIpTunnelInterfaceTable/juniIpTunnelInterfaceEntry, indexed by juniIpTunnelIfIndex, to check juniIpTunnelMode, juniIpTunnelSource, and juniIpTunnelDestination for each configured tunnel. A mismatch between juniIpTunnelDestination and the expected remote endpoint, or a juniIpTunnelRowStatus other than active, would reveal a tunnel that failed to come up or was misconfigured. Watching juniIpTunnelMtu also helps catch fragmentation issues when tunnel MTU doesn't match the underlying path MTU.

What Can Be Monitored

  • tunnel interface mode (GRE/IP-IP)
  • tunnel source and destination addresses
  • tunnel MTU
  • tunnel checksum setting
  • tunnel row status (active/configuring)
  • virtual router assignment
