Category: Cisco Devices, IP and Core Protocols, SNMP Framework

Description: Declares SNMP agent capabilities for Cisco IPv6 protocol management on various IOS and IOS-XE platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-IPV6-CAPABILITY?

CISCO-IPV6-CAPABILITY is a Cisco AGENT-CAPABILITIES module (not an object-defining MIB) that documents which parts of the IETF IPV6-MIB (RFC 2465) a given Cisco IOS or IOS XR release actually implements. Its ciscoIpv6CapCRS1V3R3R1 capability statement declares support for the ipv6GeneralGroup and then lists dozens of VARIATION clauses marking specific objects — such as ipv6IfStatsInDiscards, ipv6IfStatsOutFragFails, ipv6RouteNextHop, ipv6AddrPrefixOnLinkFlag, and ipv6NetToMediaValid — as not-implemented, read-only, or otherwise restricted on CRS-1 running IOS XR 3.3.1. Rather than exposing monitorable counters itself, it tells an NMS or MIB browser which IPV6-MIB objects will return real data versus which will be absent or fixed on this platform, which is essential context before building IPv6 monitoring around a Cisco device. It depends entirely on the structure of the IETF IPV6-MIB it profiles and on CISCO-SMI for its OID placement. Engineers consult the CISCO-IPV6-CAPABILITY MIB to know in advance which IPv6 interface and routing statistics their polling templates can actually rely on for a given Cisco platform.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-IPV6-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco CRS-1 running IOS XR 3.3.1 (and other Cisco IOS/IOS XR platforms supporting IPV6-MIB)

Monitoring Examples

Before building IPv6 interface monitoring, an operator checks the CISCO-IPV6-CAPABILITY variations for ipv6IfStatsInDiscards and ipv6IfStatsInDelivers and finds both marked not-implemented on IOS XR 3.3.1 for CRS-1; discovering this in advance prevents the monitoring system from alerting on permanently-zero counters that were never actually collected by the agent.

What Can Be Monitored

  • IPV6-MIB object implementation status (implemented/not-implemented)
  • supported vs. unsupported interface statistics counters
  • routing table object support
  • SNMP SET support per object
  • address prefix and neighbor-discovery object variations
