What Is IPV6-MIB?

IPV6-MIB is the IETF standards-based MIB for basic IPv6 network-layer management, applicable to any device implementing an IPv6 protocol stack. It exposes whether the node acts as an IPv6 router or host, the configured default hop limit, and a per-interface table with IPv6-specific attributes such as effective MTU, reassembly size limit, interface identifier, and lower-layer binding. Looking up the IPV6-MIB OID branch under the standard mib-2 tree helps confirm that a monitoring tool is polling the right ipv6IfTable instance rather than a vendor-private equivalent. For monitoring, it primarily reflects the software/protocol-stack status of the device - whether it is forwarding IPv6 traffic, its interface-table change timestamp (flagging unexpected interface churn), and MTU/reassembly parameters useful for diagnosing IPv6 connectivity issues. The ipv6IfTable/ipv6IfEntry, indexed by ipv6IfIndex, surfaces ipv6IfDescr, ipv6IfEffectiveMtu, and ipv6IfReasmMaxSize per interface - an admin might notice ipv6IfEffectiveMtu drop unexpectedly after an MTU mismatch on a link. How can I tell if a dual-stack router is actually forwarding IPv6 traffic using IPV6-MIB?
