Category: Cisco Devices, IP and Core Protocols

Description: Maps SNMP context names to corresponding VRF instances, topology names, and bridge domains on Cisco multi-VRF devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-CONTEXT-MAPPING-MIB?

This is a Cisco private MIB that solves an SNMP-architecture problem on multi-instance Cisco devices: it maps each SNMP context name to the additional identifying dimension that context represents, such as a VRF (Virtual Routing and Forwarding) instance, a topology name, a routing protocol instance name, or a bridge domain. It exposes purely configuration/mapping data rather than traffic or environmental metrics, a context-to-VRF/topology/protocol-instance mapping table and a separate context-to-bridge-domain mapping table, each with row status and storage type for managing entries. Its monitoring/management value is making multi-VRF and multi-topology Cisco devices navigable via SNMP, since a management station uses these mappings to know which SNMP context to query in order to reach the per-VRF or per-bridge-domain instance of some other MIB's data, so it is foundational plumbing rather than a source of health metrics itself. It explicitly depends on the SNMP-VIEW-BASED-ACM-MIB's context concept (VACM) and is meant to be used alongside every other Cisco MIB that varies per VRF/topology/bridge-domain context. It is deployed on Cisco multi-VRF routers and switches, such as service-provider PE routers or enterprise routers running multiple VRFs, that expose per-VRF data through multiple SNMP contexts. Engineers can download the CISCO-CONTEXT-MAPPING-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-CONTEXT-MAPPING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco multi-VRF router/switch (service-provider PE or enterprise multi-tenant device)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator troubleshooting per-VRF routing would poll cContextMappingTable/cContextMappingEntry, using cContextMappingVacmContextName to look up the corresponding cContextMappingVrfName or cContextMappingTopologyName, in order to know which SNMP context to target when querying VRF-scoped interface or routing MIBs on that device. Similarly, cContextMappingBridgeDomainTable/cContextMappingBridgeDomainEntry would be used via cContextMappingBridgeDomainIdentifier to resolve which context corresponds to a given bridge domain in an EVPN/VPLS deployment. cContextMappingRowStatus indicates whether a given mapping entry is currently active and usable.

What Can Be Monitored

  • SNMP context to VRF name mapping
  • SNMP context to topology name mapping
  • SNMP context to routing protocol instance mapping
  • SNMP context to bridge domain mapping
  • mapping entry active/row status
