Category: IP and Core Protocols, Routing Protocols

Description: Manages IP Multicast functions including multicast routing, data forwarding, and data reception for both IPv4 and IPv6, independent of the specific multicast routing protocol.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring IPMCAST-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is IPMCAST-MIB?

IPMCAST-MIB is an IETF standards-track MIB (RFC 5132, from the MBONED working group) that models generic IP Multicast forwarding and reception state independent of the underlying multicast routing protocol (PIM-SM, PIM-DM, DVMRP, etc.) and covering both IPv4 and IPv6. It defines scalars ipMcastEnabled and ipMcastRouteEntryCount, ipMcastInterfaceTable (indexed by ipMcastInterfaceIPVersion and ipMcastInterfaceIfIndex, holding ipMcastInterfaceTtl and ipMcastInterfaceRateLimit), and ipMcastSsmRangeTable (indexed by ipMcastSsmRangeAddressType/Address/PrefixLength, with ipMcastSsmRangeRowStatus) defining Source-Specific Multicast address ranges. It exposes protocol-agnostic multicast forwarding configuration and interface-level multicast parameters — whether multicast forwarding is enabled, per-interface TTL thresholds/rate limits, and configured SSM ranges — complementing protocol-specific MIBs (e.g., PIM-MIB) that expose the actual routing/forwarding-tree state. It is designed to be implemented alongside a specific multicast routing protocol MIB, since this module only covers the protocol-independent layer. It is deployed on any IPv4/IPv6 multicast-capable router regardless of vendor, and network teams referencing the IPMCAST-MIB MIB use its interface and SSM-range tables when auditing multicast configuration.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IPMCAST-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (RFC 5132), not tied to a specific manufacturer — applies to IPv4/IPv6 multicast-capable routers

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls ipMcastEnabled and ipMcastInterfaceTable's ipMcastInterfaceTtl/RateLimit for a given interface to confirm multicast forwarding is active with expected thresholds, and checks ipMcastSsmRangeTable for the correct SSM range's ipMcastSsmRangeRowStatus; an interface with ipMcastEnabled false or a missing/inactive SSM range entry would indicate multicast traffic for that source-specific group won't forward correctly.

What Can Be Monitored

  • global multicast enable state and route count
  • per-interface TTL threshold and rate limit
  • SSM address range table and row status
  • IP version (v4/v6) per multicast interface
  • device config storage type for multicast settings

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using ipMcastRouteOctets OID:

Select a device implementing IPMCAST-MIB as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type ipMcastRouteOctets into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of octets contained in IP datagrams that were received from these sources and addressed to this multicast group address, and which were forwarded by this router. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
