What Is IEEE8021-BRIDGE-MIB?

IEEE8021-BRIDGE-MIB is the IEEE 802.1Q standards-based MIB module for managing bridging devices, derived from and extending the IETF BRIDGE-MIB (RFC 4188) to cover VLAN-aware bridging components. It exposes bridge-level configuration and status objects such as bridge base addresses, number of ports per bridge component, component type and capabilities, traffic-class enablement, and MMRP (Multiple MAC Registration Protocol) status, along with per-port bridge tables. The full IEEE8021-BRIDGE-MIB OID list spans these bridge-level, per-port, and MMRP-related branches, mirroring the structure of its IETF BRIDGE-MIB predecessor while adding VLAN-aware extensions. It supports monitoring operational status through objects like ieee8021BridgeBaseDeviceCapabilities and ieee8021BridgeBaseMmrpEnabledStatus, and through row-status tracking on bridge and port table entries that reveals whether bridge components are correctly instantiated and active. It is explicitly derived from and dependent on the IETF BRIDGE-MIB (RFC 4188) and the broader IEEE 802.1Q standard. It is deployed on any vendor's Ethernet switch that implements IEEE 802.1Q VLAN bridging, from enterprise access switches to carrier Ethernet equipment.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator walks ieee8021BridgeBaseTable/ieee8021BridgeBaseEntry to read ieee8021BridgeBaseBridgeAddress and ieee8021BridgeBaseNumPorts for each bridge component, confirming the expected number of active ports on a VLAN-aware bridge. Checking ieee8021BridgeBasePortTable/ieee8021BridgeBasePortEntry per-port entries alongside ieee8021BridgeBaseRowStatus helps detect a port stuck in a non-active row state, indicating a provisioning failure. ieee8021BridgeBaseTrafficClassesEnabled and ieee8021BridgeBaseMmrpEnabledStatus are polled to confirm QoS traffic-class handling and multicast registration features are enabled as expected.
