What Is IBM-SYSTEM-MIB?

IBM-SYSTEM-MIB is an IBM-specific module tied to the IBM Director systems-management agent, providing the root structure and common status objects for monitoring IBM server hardware. It exposes a broad set of hardware health indicators covering physical and logical disks, voltage, temperature, fan speed (tachometer), network, memory, and processor subsystems. It is explicitly a hardware health-monitoring MIB: objects like ibmSystemTemperatureUp, ibmSystemTachometerUp, ibmSystemVoltageUp, ibmSystemPowerUp, ibmSystemProcessorUp, and ibmSystemMemoryUp report the up/down status of these subsystems, effectively summarizing whether temperature, fans, power supplies, CPU, and memory are all functioning normally. It depends on the IBM enterprise IBM-SYSTEM-MIB OID tree (ibm/ibmProd/ibmServer) and is generated/maintained by the IBM Director agent rather than being a standalone IETF standard. It is deployed on IBM server hardware running the IBM Director systems-management agent in enterprise data centers.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IBM-SYSTEM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

What Can Be Monitored

  • physical disk status
  • logical disk status
  • voltage status
  • temperature status
  • fan (tachometer) status
  • CPU/memory/power/network subsystem status

Supported Devices

  • IBM server hardware managed by IBM Director

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll ibmSystemTemperatureUp, ibmSystemVoltageUp, and ibmSystemTachometerUp together to get a quick composite health check of a server's thermal, electrical, and cooling subsystems, and check ibmSystemPhysicalDiskUp/ibmSystemLogicalDiskUp for storage health. A value indicating down or non-normal on ibmSystemProcessorUp or ibmSystemPowerUp would signal a failed CPU or power supply requiring immediate attention. ibmSystemAgentVersion can also be polled to confirm which IBM Director agent version is running on the managed system.
