Category: Domain: Server Hardware, Vendor: IBM

Description: IBM MIB covering configuration and statistics monitoring of network adapters on IBM server systems.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is IBM-SYSTEM-NETWORK-MIB?

IBM-SYSTEM-NETWORK-MIB is an IBM enterprise MIB for monitoring the network adapters installed in IBM server systems (e.g., IBM Power or System p/i servers), covering the systems/servers technology area rather than a specific switch or router product. It exposes a logical network adapter table describing each adapter's identity, description, device ID, and operational status alongside traffic counters. This is squarely software/hardware status monitoring for server NICs: administrators can check ibmSystemLogicalNetworkAdapterStatus to see if an adapter is up, and use the octets-received/transmitted counters and configured speed to gauge throughput and detect performance problems. As an IBM-specific server MIB it typically complements the standard IF-MIB on the same host rather than replacing it, since both may describe overlapping adapter-level data. It is deployed on IBM server hardware running AIX or IBM-managed operating environments where logical network adapters need vendor-specific visibility, and IBM-SYSTEM-NETWORK-MIB SNMP monitoring supplies that visibility alongside the standard IF-MIB data.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IBM-SYSTEM-NETWORK-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • IBM server system (e.g., Power/System p or i server)

Monitoring Examples

The ibmSystemLogicalNetworkAdapterTable/Entry, indexed by ibmSystemLogicalNetworkAdapterKeyIndex, exposes ibmSystemLogicalNetworkAdapterName, ibmSystemLogicalNetworkAdapterDescription, and ibmSystemLogicalNetworkAdapterDeviceID for adapter identification. An administrator would poll ibmSystemLogicalNetworkAdapterStatus together with ibmSystemLogicalNetworkAdapterOctetsReceived/Transmitted to detect an adapter that has gone down or one whose traffic counters have stopped incrementing, indicating a failed or disconnected NIC; ibmSystemLogicalNetworkAdapterSpeed and ibmSystemLogicalNetworkAdapterPermanentAddress round out the inventory picture.

What Can Be Monitored

  • network adapter operational status
  • octets received/transmitted
  • adapter speed
  • adapter permanent (MAC) address
  • adapter description/device ID
