What Is Hub-rptr-prvt?

Hub-rptr-prvt is a vendor-private extension MIB layered on top of the standard IEEE 802.3 Repeater MIB, adding proprietary objects for hub/repeater devices used in legacy shared-Ethernet networks. It exposes low-level hardware and link-layer fault counters for repeater ports and groups, such as descriptor overflow counts, memory errors, and jabber events, plus management-connection port information. Its central use is hardware fault monitoring: rptrMemoryErrors and the descriptor overflow counters reveal internal buffer or memory faults in the repeater hardware, rptrJabberCounter flags malfunctioning stations flooding the segment with jabber signals, and the rptrfmGroupTable's status objects report the global operational health of each repeater group/module. As a private extension it clearly depends on and complements the standard Repeater MIB (RFC 1516/2108) for baseline repeater management objects. This MIB is deployed on legacy Ethernet hub/repeater hardware in older shared-media LAN segments, largely from a specific hub vendor's product line predating switched Ethernet, and technicians maintaining this equipment can download the Hub-rptr-prvt file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll rptrfmGroupTable/rptrfmGroupEntry, indexed by rptrGroupIndex, to read rptrGroupGlobalStatus and rptrGroupPrevStatus, catching a transition from normal to a fault status that indicates a repeater group has failed or degraded. Rising rptrRxDscrptrOverFlow or rptrTxDscrptrOverFlow counts alongside rptrMemoryErrors would point to a hardware buffer or memory problem inside the repeater needing replacement. A climbing rptrJabberCounter would identify a misbehaving NIC on the segment continuously jabbering and disrupting shared-media traffic.
