What Is HUAWEI-IPDSLAM-MSTP-MIB?

HUAWEI-IPDSLAM-MSTP-MIB is a Huawei enterprise MIB for IP-DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexer) platforms, defining objects to manage the Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP), an enhancement over STP/RSTP that lets multiple VLANs share redundant paths for load-sharing while preventing loops. It exposes per-instance and per-port MSTP configuration and state, such as spanning-tree instance mappings, port roles, and topology parameters. Its monitoring value is centered on Layer 2 topology/software status: which MSTP instance a VLAN maps to, each port's spanning-tree role and state (root, designated, blocking, forwarding), and topology-change counts that reveal network instability or a physical loop. It is an extension of the IEEE 802.1s MSTP standard layered on Huawei's DSLAM system and bridge MIB framework, depending conceptually on the standard Bridge MIB model. It is deployed on Huawei IP-DSLAM access nodes in broadband access networks where multiple redundant uplinks must be load-shared and protected against loops. Engineers can download the HUAWEI-IPDSLAM-MSTP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using hwMstpiStpRXStpBPDU OID:

Select a Huawei IP-DSLAM access node (Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type hwMstpiStpRXStpBPDU into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. Indicates the number of BPDUs received by the port. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
