Category: Technology: Routing, Vendor: H3C/HH3C, Vendor: HP/HPE

Description: Manages Policy-Based Routing (PBR) route-map rules and next-hop configuration on HP/Comware routers.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HPN-ICF-PBR-MIB?

HPN-ICF-PBR-MIB is an HP Networking (Comware ICF) private MIB managing Policy-Based Routing (PBR), letting IP packets be routed according to user-defined policy rather than plain destination-address-based routing on HP/H3C-derived routers and switches. It exposes route-map/policy-node configuration tables, next-hop address and address-type settings, and trap-enable flags for IPv4 and IPv6 PBR next-hop events. Its monitoring emphasis is configuration and fault status of the routing policy layer: an operator can verify a PBR policy node's row status is active, confirm its configured next-hop address is correct, and receive traps (hpnicfPBRMibTrap) when a PBR next-hop becomes unreachable, indicating a policy-routed path has failed over or gone down. It builds on the standard IETF policy-routing conventions and typically works alongside standard IP-MIB/routing MIBs for base connectivity. It is deployed on HP/H3C Comware-based enterprise routers and Layer 3 switches where traffic needs to be steered by policy (e.g., for load distribution or compliance routing) rather than destination-only routing, with network teams performing an HPN-ICF-PBR-MIB download to integrate it into their SNMP management tools.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HPN-ICF-PBR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP Networking Comware router
  • HP/H3C Layer 3 switch

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll hpnicfPBRMibPolicyNodeTable/hpnicfPBRMibPolicyNodeEntry for a given hpnicfPBRMibPolicyName and hpnicfPBRMibPolicyNodeId, checking hpnicfPBRMibPolicyNodeRowStatus is active and hpnicfPBRNexthopAddr resolves to a live next hop. If hpnicfPBRNexthopTrapEnabled is set, a trap firing indicates the configured PBR next-hop has become unreachable, meaning traffic matching that policy node may be black-holed or falling back to default routing. hpnicfPBRIPv6NexthopTrapEnabled covers the equivalent condition for IPv6 policy routes.

What Can Be Monitored

  • PBR policy node row status
  • configured next-hop address
  • next-hop reachability trap state
  • IPv6 next-hop trap state
