Description: Monitors and configures digital signal processor (DSP) resources used for voice processing on HP/Comware routers.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HPN-ICF-DSP-MIB?

HPN-ICF-DSP-MIB is an HP/Comware ICF MIB that monitors and configures Digital Signal Processor (DSP) resources used for voice-processing (e.g., VoIP transcoding/echo cancellation) on HP routers. It exposes two levels of data: a Voice Processing Module (VPM) status table with resource utilization and channel capacity, and a per-DSP status table nested under each VPM, plus DSP-related trap definitions. This is squarely hardware/resource-health monitoring: administrators track DSP/VPM resource utilization and high-water marks to detect when voice-processing hardware is nearing capacity, and DSP state/trap objects flag failed or degraded DSP chips before calls start failing. As a vendor-specific hardware resource MIB it has no significant dependency on external standard MIBs, though it is typically deployed alongside standard voice/telephony MIBs. It runs on HP/H3C Comware voice-gateway routers and integrated access devices carrying VoIP traffic, where an HPN-ICF-DSP-MIB download lets administrators track DSP/VPM capacity before voice calls start failing.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HPN-ICF-DSP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP/H3C Comware voice gateway router
  • integrated access device with VoIP/DSP hardware

Monitoring Examples

An administrator polls hpnicfVPMStatusTable/hpnicfVPMStatusEntry for hpnicfVPMResourceUtilization and hpnicfVPMHiWaterUtilization against hpnicfVPMMaxChannel to see how close a voice-processing module is to its channel capacity. Drilling into hpnicfDSPStatusTable/hpnicfDSPStatusEntry via hpnicfDSPVPMIndex shows individual DSP chip state; a DSP reporting a fault state alongside hpnicfDSPTrap notifications indicates a failed transcoding resource that could drop active calls. Sustained high hpnicfVPMResourceUtilization across all VPMs signals the gateway is approaching its voice-channel capacity limit.

What Can Be Monitored

  • DSP/VPM resource utilization
  • high-water utilization mark
  • maximum channel capacity
  • per-DSP operational state
  • DSP fault traps

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using hpnicfVPMState OID:

Select an HP/H3C Comware voice gateway router/IAD (DSP/VPM voice-processing hardware) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type hpnicfVPMState into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The object indicates the current state of VPM card being monitored. normal(1) - VPM card in normal condition. warning(2) - VPM card has some problem and need attention. fatal(3) - VPM card is not functional. offLine(4) - VPM card is in off-line. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is anything other than 'normal', since that indicates the condition this object reports has changed to one worth investigating. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
