What Is HP-ICF-CHAIN?

HP-ICF-CHAIN is an HP (Hewlett-Packard Networking) vendor-specific MIB under the HP-ICF-OID hpicfCommon tree that models HP's Distributed Management Chain - a daisy-chained physical stacking topology used on HP AdvanceStack-era devices - rather than exclusively modern ProCurve hardware as the hint suggests, given its earliest revisions date to 1994. Scalars hpicfChainMaxMembers, hpicfChainCurMembers, hpicfChainLastChange, and hpicfChainChanges summarize how many boxes are on the chain and when membership last changed, while hpicfChainTable (indexed by hpicfChainId, typically a serial number or MAC address) lists every box on the chain with its hpicfChainObjectId (device type), hpicfChainTimestamp, hpicfChainHasAgent flag, hpicfChainThisBox flag, and an operator-assignable hpicfChainLocation ordering value. A companion hpicfChainViewTable lists the boxes a given agent can proxy SNMP requests to on behalf of agent-less chain members. The single current notification, hpicfChainRemoval, reports when a box leaves the chain (the original hpicfChainAddition trap is deprecated in favor of relying on Cold Start). It is deployed on HP AdvanceStack/ProCurve devices connected in a physical management chain, and administrators download the HP-ICF-CHAIN file to track chain membership and proxy topology.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HP-ICF-CHAIN. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls hpicfChainCurMembers against hpicfChainMaxMembers and walks hpicfChainTable for hpicfChainHasAgent flags, and an unexpected drop in hpicfChainCurMembers paired with an hpicfChainRemoval trap would indicate a box was physically disconnected from the management chain.
