What Is GSWITCH-MIB?

GSWITCH-MIB is a generic/proprietary Layer 2 switch MIB (organized under the "nbase"/"gswitch" branch) providing common switching management objects covering port counts, MAC address table entries, uplink configuration, and Spanning Tree operation. It exposes both inventory/versioning data (hardware and software version objects for the base unit, cards, and uplinks) and operational configuration such as port counts, MAC table size/aging behavior, and spanning tree/learning process state. This MIB is notably useful for monitoring both hardware and software status: version objects like nbsBaseHardVers, nbsCardHardVers, nbsUpLinkHardVers, and nbsSoftVers let an administrator confirm hardware revisions and firmware/software version in use, while nbsSpanningTree and nbsLearningProcess reflect whether core switching functions are enabled and operating, and nbsNMacRecords/nbsMacFirstGap reveal MAC table utilization and aging behavior. As a vendor-generic switch MIB it appears self-contained without strong dependency on other standard MIBs, though it overlaps conceptually with BRIDGE-MIB/dot1dBridge functionality. Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll nbsSoftVers and nbsBaseHardVers to confirm the switch is running the expected firmware and hardware revision after a maintenance window, and check nbsNPorts and nbsUpLinkType to verify port count and uplink media type match the expected configuration. Monitoring nbsNMacRecords over time reveals MAC table growth that could indicate a MAC flooding condition or unusual network topology change, while nbsSpanningTree and nbsLearningProcess being disabled unexpectedly would explain a switch not properly participating in loop prevention or address learning.
