What Is Fore-Lane-MIB?

Fore-Lane-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from Fore Systems (an early ATM switch/networking vendor, later acquired by Marconi) for managing LAN Emulation (LANE) services over ATM networks. It defines configuration and status objects for LAN Emulation Clients (LECs), including the LES/BUS/LECS components that together let legacy Ethernet or Token Ring traffic run transparently over an ATM backbone. Its monitoring value is centered on emulated-LAN service health: administrative and operational status of each LEC, its ATM address, MAC address, and which emulated LAN (ELAN) and LECS configuration it is bound to. It complements the standard ATM Forum LANE architecture and IETF ATM MIBs by adding Fore-specific configuration detail. It was typically deployed in enterprise or carrier ATM backbones during the era when ATM was used to interconnect legacy LAN segments, and legacy-network archivists can still download the Fore-Lane-MIB file to load it into a MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An operator can poll lecConfTable/lecConfEntry to see each configured LEC's lecConfAtmAddress, lecConfElanName, and lecConfMacAddress, and compare lecConfAdminStatus against lecConfOperStatus to spot a LEC that is administratively enabled but operationally down. A mismatch typically signals a failure joining the emulated LAN, such as an unreachable LECS or misconfigured lecConfLecsConfigType. The lecStatGroup objects would additionally be polled for LANE-specific traffic and error counters on each client.
