Description: Fore Systems file transfer MIB providing SNMP-managed file transfer objects for uploading firmware and configuration images to ForeRunner switches.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is Fore-FileXfr-MIB?
Fore-FileXfr-MIB is a Fore Systems (later Marconi) enterprise MIB that provides a generic SNMP-managed file-transfer facility for ForeRunner ATM switches, used to push firmware images and configuration files to and from the device. It exposes a file-transfer table where each entry describes the parameters and outcome of one transfer job: source/destination file locations, transfer direction, and status. Its monitoring role is centered on software status -- specifically the progress and result of firmware/config upload-download operations -- letting an operator confirm a code or configuration push completed successfully rather than stalling or failing partway through. As a generic file-transfer mechanism it depends on standard file-transfer protocols referenced by the remote file URL rather than another SNMP MIB, and is typically used alongside vendor firmware-version MIBs to verify the transferred image matches expectations. It is deployed on Fore Systems/Marconi ForeRunner ATM switches during firmware upgrades or configuration deployment operations. Engineers can download the Fore-FileXfr-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Fore-FileXfr-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Fore Systems / Marconi ForeRunner ATM switches
Monitoring Examples
An operator would create an fXfrTable/fXfrEntry row (indexed by fXfrIndex, obtained via fXfrNextIndex) specifying fXfrRemoteFileUrl and fXfrLocalFile along with fXfrDirection to push a new firmware image to the switch, then poll fXfrStatus and fXfrStatusText to watch the transfer progress from in-progress to success or a specific failure reason. Setting fXfrEntryStatus to active starts the job, and fXfrOwnerIpAddress/fXfrOwnerSignature identify which management station initiated it, useful when multiple transfers are tracked concurrently. A transfer stuck in a non-terminal fXfrStatus for an extended time would indicate a network path or remote-server problem interrupting the firmware push.
What Can Be Monitored
- file transfer job status
- transfer direction (upload/download)
- remote/local file paths
- transfer owner identification
- transfer completion/error text
