Description: Fore Systems DSX1 interface extension MIB providing enhanced T1/E1 framing and performance monitoring objects for ForeRunner ATM switch DS1 ports.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Fore-DSX1-MIB?

Fore-DSX1-MIB is a vendor extension MIB from Fore Systems (later part of Marconi/GE) that augments the standard DS1/E1 (DSX1) MIB for FORE's ForeRunner ATM switch platforms. It exposes configuration and status data for T1/E1 line modules, including line coding, line length, impedance, facility data link (FDL) settings, and AIS (Alarm Indication Signal) conditions. Monitoring this MIB lets an operator check the hardware health of individual DS1 ports, tracking line configuration mismatches, upstream AIS alarms, and FDL performance report status that signal physical layer faults on the interface. It extends and depends on the standard DS1/E1 MIB (RFC 1406/2495) by adding FORE-specific line index, port model, and admin status objects rather than duplicating base counters. It is deployed on ForeRunner ATM edge/core switches where DS1/E1 circuits provide WAN access, with Fore-DSX1-MIB SNMP monitoring typically polled by carrier or enterprise NOC tools alongside the standard DS1 MIB.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Fore-DSX1-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Fore Systems ForeRunner ATM switch
  • T1/E1 (DSX1) WAN interface module

Monitoring Examples

An admin polls dsx1ForeConfTable/dsx1ForeConfEntry indexed by dsx1ForeLineIndex to confirm dsx1ForeLineLength and dsx1ForeLineImpedance match the physical cabling for a given DSX1 port. A sudden dsx1ForeUpStreamAIS assertion combined with an unexpected dsx1ForeAdminStatus change would indicate the upstream carrier facility has dropped or the port was administratively taken down. Polling dsx1ForeFdlPerfConf and dsx1ForeFdlBomConf reveals whether facility data link performance reporting (ESF FDL) is active for detecting line errors.

What Can Be Monitored

  • DSX1 line coding/receive code
  • line length setting
  • line impedance
  • FDL configuration
  • upstream AIS alarm status
  • port admin status

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using dsx1ForeFramingLOSs OID:

Select a Fore Systems (later Marconi) ForeRunner ATM switch (T1/E1 DSX1 WAN interface module) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type dsx1ForeFramingLOSs into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of secondsx in which Loss Of Signal (LOS) errors have been detected. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
