Description: Fore Systems DSX3 extension MIB providing additional DS3 performance monitoring and configuration objects for ForeRunner ATM switch T3 interfaces.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Fore-DSX3-Ext-MIB?

Fore-DSX3-Ext-MIB is a Fore Systems proprietary MIB extending the standard DS3 MIB with additional configuration, statistics, and diagnostic objects for T3/DS3 interfaces on ForeRunner ATM switches. It exposes a per-interface DS3 configuration table (receive line code, line length, line status, line-type framing) plus P-bit parity error threshold/count objects and signal degrade/fail bit-error-rate (BER) thresholds and the BER error model used. Its monitoring focus is hardware/physical-layer performance status: an operator uses it to track P-bit parity errors against a configured threshold and compare live BER against configured signal-degrade and signal-fail thresholds, which reveals a degrading or failing DS3 line before a full outage occurs. It explicitly extends the standard DS3 MIB (RFC 1407 lineage), so it depends on and supplements that base MIB's objects rather than replacing them. It is deployed on Fore Systems ForeRunner ATM switches carrying DS3/T3 trunk circuits in carrier or enterprise ATM/WAN backbones, and administrators can get the Fore-DSX3-Ext-MIB download to load directly into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Fore-DSX3-Ext-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Fore Systems ForeRunner ATM switch (DS3/T3 interface)

Monitoring Examples

An admin would walk foreDsx3ConfigTable/foreDsx3ConfigEntry to check foreDsx3ConfigReceiveCode and foreDsx3ConfigLineLength against the provisioned circuit spec, and monitor foreDsx3ConfigStatus for a line alarm condition. foreDsx3PbitPerrThrSeconds/foreDsx3PbitPerrThrErrors would be compared against live P-bit parity error counts to catch line degradation, while foreDsx3SignalDegradeBer and foreDsx3SignalFailBer (interpreted via foreDsx3BerErrorModel) define the bit-error-rate thresholds that, if crossed, indicate the DS3 line is degrading toward or has reached a failure condition.

What Can Be Monitored

  • DS3 line configuration (code, length, framing)
  • line status/alarm state
  • P-bit parity error threshold and count
  • signal degrade/fail BER thresholds
  • BER error model

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using foreDsx3TotalFramingLOSs OID:

Select a Fore Systems (later Marconi) ForeRunner ATM switch (DS3/T3 interface extensions) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type foreDsx3TotalFramingLOSs into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of seconds in which Loss Of Signal (LOS) errors were detected by the DS3 Receive Framer block. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
