Description: Defines managed objects for monitoring and controlling the Frame Relay/ATM PVC Service Interworking Function.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring FR-ATM-PVC-SERVICE-IWF-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is FR-ATM-PVC-SERVICE-IWF-MIB?

FR-ATM-PVC-SERVICE-IWF-MIB is an IETF standards-track MIB (RFC 2955) developed by the Frame Relay Service MIB Working Group that models the Frame Relay/ATM PVC Service Interworking Function, which cross-connects a Frame Relay PVC to one or more ATM PVCs (or vice versa) for point-to-point or point-to-multipoint interworking. Its central frAtmIwfConnectionTable is indexed by frAtmIwfConnIndex plus the ATM port/VPI/VCI and Frame Relay port/DLCI, and exposes per-direction operational status (frAtmIwfConnAtm2FrOperStatus, frAtmIwfConnFr2AtmOperStatus with their LastChange timestamps) and translation-failure counters (frAtmIwfConnFailedFrameTranslate, frAtmIwfConnOverSizedFrames, frAtmIwfConnFailedAal5PduTranslate, frAtmIwfConnCrcErrors, frAtmIwfConnSarTimeOuts). Rows are managed via frAtmIwfConnRowStatus and created using the frAtmIwfConnIndexNext allocator, giving operators visibility into both the health of the interworking translation itself and the underlying PVCs. It depends on the ATM-MIB, ATM-TC-MIB, and IF-MIB for the underlying port and PVC identifiers, and is deployed on edge devices performing FR/ATM interworking in carrier and enterprise WANs, with the FR-ATM-PVC-SERVICE-IWF-MIB RFC defining its exact object semantics.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in FR-ATM-PVC-SERVICE-IWF-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (RFC 2955), not tied to a specific manufacturer — applies to routers/switches performing Frame Relay/ATM interworking

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls frAtmIwfConnAtm2FrOperStatus and frAtmIwfConnFr2AtmOperStatus for a connection in frAtmIwfConnectionTable to confirm both translation directions are up, while watching frAtmIwfConnFailedAal5PduTranslate and frAtmIwfConnCrcErrors; a status transition to down accompanied by a spike in frAtmIwfConnFailedFrameTranslate would indicate the interworking function is dropping traffic due to a translation or framing mismatch between the FR and ATM legs.

What Can Be Monitored

  • FR/ATM interworking connection table entries
  • per-direction operational status (ATM-to-FR, FR-to-ATM)
  • frame/PDU translation failure counters
  • oversized frame and SDU counters
  • CRC error and SAR timeout counters

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using frAtmIwfConnFailedFrameTranslate OID:

Select a device implementing FR-ATM-PVC-SERVICE-IWF-MIB as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type frAtmIwfConnFailedFrameTranslate into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of frames discarded by the IWF because it was unable to decode the incoming frame payload header according to the mapping rules while operating in Translation Mode. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
