Description: Brocade Foundry Committed Access Rate (CAR) MIB providing per-interface traffic policing configuration and statistics for rate limiting on FastIron devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is FOUNDRY-CAR-MIB?

FOUNDRY-CAR-MIB is a Brocade Communications Systems MIB (snCAR, formerly Foundry Networks, under the snSwitch enterprise branch) implementing Committed Access Rate traffic policing on FastIron-family switches. Its core table, snPortCARTable, is indexed by interface, traffic direction (input/output via the PacketSource convention), and a per-rule row index, and configures the rate-limit's matching criteria (RateLimitType: all traffic, or traffic matching a standard or 'quick' access list via snPortCARAccIdx), the committed rate and normal/extended burst limits (snPortCARRate, snPortCARLimit, snPortCARExtLimit), and the conform/exceed actions (RateLimitAction: continue, drop, transmit, or rewrite-IP-precedence-and-transmit/continue). Live traffic results are tracked via per-rule packet/byte counters for switched and filtered traffic and the current burst gauge (snPortCARStatSwitchedPkts/Bytes, snPortCARStatFilteredPkts/Bytes, snPortCARStatCurBurst), plus a companion agRateLimitCounterTable giving forwarded/dropped/remarked/total octet counts per interface and rule. This lets an operator verify that a configured rate limit is actually being enforced and see how much traffic it is dropping or remarking versus passing through. It depends on the IF-MIB (InterfaceIndex, ifIndex) and Brocade/Foundry's base FOUNDRY-SN-SWITCH-GROUP-MIB, and is deployed on Brocade FastIron switches doing per-port traffic-rate enforcement; network teams can download the FOUNDRY-CAR-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in FOUNDRY-CAR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Brocade (formerly Foundry Networks) FastIron switches

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls snPortCARStatFilteredPkts and snPortCARStatCurBurst for a port with a configured rate-limit rule to see how much traffic is being dropped versus passing under the committed rate; a rapidly climbing snPortCARStatFilteredBytes counter alongside a burst gauge pegged near snPortCARExtLimit would indicate the port is being throttled hard enough to affect application performance.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-rule committed rate and burst limits
  • conform/exceed action configuration
  • per-rule switched vs. filtered packet/byte counters
  • current burst size gauge
  • per-interface forwarded/dropped/remarked octet totals

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using snPortCARStatSwitchedPkts OID:

Select a Brocade/Foundry FastIron switch (Committed Access Rate traffic policing) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type snPortCARStatSwitchedPkts into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The counter of packets permitted by this rate limit. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
