Description: F5 Networks 3-DNS wide-IP management MIB providing global server load balancing and DNS-based traffic distribution monitoring.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is F5-3DNS-MIB?

F5-3DNS-MIB is an F5 Networks MIB for the legacy 3-DNS product (predecessor to F5's Global Traffic Manager/GTM), which provides DNS-based global server load balancing across geographically distributed data centers. It exposes configuration and timer objects controlling how 3-DNS gathers load-balancing data from remote wide-IP and virtual-server sources, along with round-trip-time (RTT) probe settings used to measure path quality to distributed sites. Its monitoring emphasis is on the software-level health and responsiveness of the global load-balancing decision process — whether RTT probes are succeeding within their timeout, how frequently load-balancing router and virtual-server data is refreshed (via TTL/timer settings), and which alternate/default load-balancing method is in effect. As a member of F5's enterprise MIB tree it depends on and complements other F5 modules (such as BIG-IP LTM MIBs) that report the actual server/pool health being globally load-balanced. It is deployed in multi-site enterprise environments needing DNS-based failover and traffic distribution across data centers. Engineers can download the F5-3DNS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in F5-3DNS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • F5 Networks 3-DNS global traffic management appliances

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll globalRTTTimeout, globalRTTSampleCount, and globalRTTProbeProtocol to confirm round-trip-time probes to remote sites are configured sensibly and succeeding, since rising RTT or probe failures indicate a path or remote-site problem affecting global load-balancing decisions. Checking globalLBRouterTTL, globalVSTTL, and globalPathTTL shows how fresh the load-balancer's view of remote virtual-server and path data is, and globalDefaultAlternate/globalCheckStaticDepends reveal which fallback method is used when preferred data is unavailable. Stale TTL values combined with growing RTT would suggest the 3-DNS system is making load-balancing decisions on outdated site-health information.

What Can Be Monitored

  • RTT probe timeout/results to remote sites
  • load-balancer data refresh timers (TTLs)
  • default/alternate load-balancing method in use
  • static dependency check status
