Description: Manages Cisco Telnet server sessions including active connections, authentication state, and session configuration.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-TELNET-SERVER-MIB?
CISCO-TELNET-SERVER-MIB is a Cisco enterprise MIB for managing and monitoring the device's built-in Telnet server, which allows remote command-line login sessions over the network. It exposes a global Telnet activation setting, notification enables for session start/end/denial/failure events, and a sessions table tracking each active session's ID, description, client address and address type, and associated process ID. Its monitoring value is centered on remote-access session status and process-level software state: administrators track active Telnet sessions, their client source addresses, and PIDs to detect unauthorized or excessive login activity, and watch session-denied/failure notifications to catch authentication problems or connection-limit issues. It relies on standard Cisco enterprise conventions and complements comparable SSH/console session MIBs. It is deployed on Cisco routers and switches wherever Telnet remote management access is enabled and needs auditing. Engineers can download the CISCO-TELNET-SERVER-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-TELNET-SERVER-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco router
- Cisco switch
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would walk ctsSessionsTable/ctsSessionsEntry to list active sessions by ctsSessionID, checking ctsSessionsClientAddress and ctsSessionClientAddressType to identify who is connected, and ctsSessionPID to correlate with device process state. Monitoring ctsSessionDeniedNotifEnable and ctsSessionFailureNotifEnable-triggered traps would reveal repeated failed login attempts suggesting a brute-force attempt. An unexpected session appearing from an unrecognized ctsSessionsClientAddress would indicate unauthorized Telnet access to the device.
What Can Be Monitored
- Telnet server activation state
- active session count and details (ID, client address, PID)
- session started/ended/denied/failure notifications
