Category: Link Aggregation, Vendor: Ericsson

Description: Manages multi-chassis link aggregation group (MC-LAG) configuration and inter-chassis synchronization on Ericsson SmartEdge BRAS.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RBN-MC-LAG-MIB?

RBN-MC-LAG-MIB is an Ericsson (Redback) SmartEdge enterprise MIB, derived from RBN-LAG-MIB, that manages Multi-Chassis Link Aggregation Groups (MC-LAG) spanning two physically separate chassis for redundancy. It exposes configuration objects such as system priority, system MAC address, and revertive-mode/hold-timer settings, alongside operational status objects covering current operational state, error codes, and switchover history. This directly supports monitoring of the software/control-plane health of a redundant link-aggregation pair: administrators can detect an unplanned MC-LAG switchover, its cause, and how long it took, which are strong indicators of a peer-chassis or link failure. It builds conceptually on IEEE 802.1AX (formerly 802.3ad) link aggregation standards, adapted for a multi-chassis/cross-box topology in Ericsson's enterprise MIB tree. It is deployed in SmartEdge access/edge deployments requiring chassis-level redundancy, where RBN-MC-LAG-MIB SNMP monitoring is standard for subscriber-facing aggregated links.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-MC-LAG-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ericsson/Redback SmartEdge BRAS
  • SmartEdge multi-chassis redundant edge router pair

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls rbnMcLagTable/rbnMcLagEntry keyed by rbnMcLagId to check rbnMcLagOperState for each rbnMcLagName, and inspects rbnMcLagOperErrorCode when a group is not fully operational. A trap-driven workflow watches rbnMcLagSwitchOverTime and rbnMcLagSwitchOverReason to alert when the active chassis fails over, and rbnMcLagRevertiveMode/rbnMcLagRevertiveHoldTimer settings determine whether traffic reverts automatically once the primary chassis recovers.

What Can Be Monitored

  • MC-LAG operational state
  • switchover time and reason
  • operational error code
  • system priority/MAC
  • revertive mode and hold timer
