Category: Vendor: Enterasys/Cabletron
Description: Enterasys Networks extension to the MAU-MIB providing additional medium attachment unit management objects.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is ENTERASYS-MAU-MIB-EXT-MIB?
ENTERASYS-MAU-MIB-EXT-MIB is an Enterasys Networks vendor extension to the standard IETF MAU-MIB (medium attachment unit MIB), adding vendor-specific physical-layer objects not covered by the base standard. It exposes per-port Ethernet physical-layer status through etsysIfMauExtMDIXTable (auto-MDIX crossover status) and etsysIfMauExtMasterSlaveTable (Gigabit Ethernet master/slave clocking role), both indexed like the standard MAU-MIB. Its monitoring value is hardware/physical-layer status: administrators check whether a port's auto-MDIX negotiation resolved correctly and which side is acting as timing master versus slave on a Gigabit link, both of which can explain a link that won't come up or negotiates at reduced speed. As its name states, it explicitly extends the standard MAU-MIB (and by extension depends on IF-MIB for ifIndex) rather than functioning as a standalone module. It is deployed on Enterasys (later Extreme Networks) enterprise switches wherever copper Gigabit Ethernet ports need detailed physical-layer diagnostics beyond the base MAU-MIB. Engineers can download the ENTERASYS-MAU-MIB-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ENTERASYS-MAU-MIB-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Enterasys (Extreme Networks) enterprise Ethernet switch
Monitoring Examples
An administrator polls etsysIfMauExtMDIXTable/etsysIfMauExtMDIXEntry to check etsysIfMauExtMDIXStatus on a port that's failing to link up, confirming whether auto-MDIX correctly detected a straight-through versus crossover cable. On a Gigabit link with intermittent errors, etsysIfMauExtMasterSlaveTable/etsysIfMauExtMasterSlaveEntry is checked via etsysIfMauExtMasterSlaveStatus to verify the clocking master/slave negotiation resolved as expected, since a master/master or slave/slave conflict prevents the link from establishing. These extended MAU objects are typically cross-referenced with the standard MAU-MIB's own line-status objects for full diagnostic context.
What Can Be Monitored
- auto-MDIX crossover status
- Gigabit Ethernet master/slave clocking role
- physical-layer port negotiation status
