What Is MAU-MIB?
This is an IETF/IEEE standards-based MIB (RFC 3636, referencing IEEE 802.3 Clause 30) that manages Medium Attachment Units, the physical-layer transceivers on Ethernet interfaces. It exposes objects describing link type, supported and operating speed, duplex mode, and auto-negotiation capability and status for each MAU associated with an interface. Its monitoring value is squarely hardware status at the physical layer: detecting duplex mismatches, confirming whether auto-negotiation succeeded or a link is forced, and identifying the specific MAU type (e.g., copper vs. fiber) in use on a port. It is explicitly designed to be used together with IF-MIB, since MAU entries are indexed by interface, extending standard interface status with physical-layer transceiver detail. It is deployed universally across enterprise and carrier switches/routers wherever Ethernet physical-layer diagnostics are needed beyond basic link up/down state. The MAU-MIB OID branch is typically walked alongside ifIndex-based IF-MIB queries when diagnosing physical-layer link problems such as a suspected duplex mismatch.

Monitoring Examples
A network engineer would poll the MAU auto-negotiation status and capability objects on a port experiencing intermittent errors to check for a duplex mismatch against its link partner. The operating speed/duplex objects would be compared to the expected configuration after a cable or NIC swap to confirm the link renegotiated correctly. MAU type objects help distinguish copper RJ45 ports from SFP/fiber ports when auditing physical connectivity across a switch stack.
