Category: Technology: Bridging, Vendor: Enterasys/Cabletron

Description: Enterasys Networks proprietary extension to the IEEE8021-BRIDGE-MIB providing additional bridge port configuration objects.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ENTERASYS-IEEE8021-BRIDGE-MIB-EXT-MIB?

This is an Enterasys Networks (now part of Extreme Networks) enterprise MIB that extends the standard IEEE8021-BRIDGE-MIB with proprietary bridge port configuration objects for Enterasys switches. It exposes configuration-oriented data covering bridge base mode, per-port bridge component identifiers, and Multiple Registration Protocol (MRP) timer and enable settings on switch ports. While primarily a configuration MIB rather than a hardware-health MIB, it supports operational monitoring of bridge port state and MRP periodic transmission status, which helps confirm that Layer 2 protocol control planes on a port are active and correctly timed. It explicitly depends on and augments the IEEE 802.1 standard Bridge MIB, so it must be read alongside that base MIB rather than standalone. It is typically deployed in enterprise campus or data center networks running Enterasys/Extreme switching gear where administrators need finer per-port bridge control than the standard MIB provides. Engineers can download the ENTERASYS-IEEE8021-BRIDGE-MIB-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ENTERASYS-IEEE8021-BRIDGE-MIB-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Enterasys (Extreme Networks) enterprise switches

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll etsysIeee8021BridgeBasePortTable / etsysIeee8021BridgeBasePortEntry alongside etsys8021BridgePortComponentId to confirm which bridge component a given physical port is mapped to in a multi-component bridge deployment. Polling etsysIeee8021BridgeMibExtMrpTable and etsysIeee8021BridgeMibExtMrpPeriodicEnabled reveals whether periodic MRP refresh messages are enabled on a port, and an unexpected 'false' value would explain stale MVRP/MMRP registrations propagating across the network. The etsysIeee8021BridgeBaseMode object gives the overall bridging mode in effect, useful for verifying a switch is operating in the expected bridge mode after a configuration change.

What Can Be Monitored

  • bridge base mode
  • bridge port-to-component mapping
  • MRP periodic transmission enable state
  • per-port bridge component ID

RFC description

Proprietary extensions to IEEE8021-BRIDGE-MIB for Enterasys network bridge management.

Start monitoring Enterasys Networks switch (legacy, later Extreme Networks) (802.1 Bridge MIB extensions, MRP) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
