Description: Defines SNMP notification objects for DOCSIS-compliant cable modems and cable modem termination systems.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring DOCS-IETF-CABLE-DEVICE-NOTIFICATION-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is DOCS-IETF-CABLE-DEVICE-NOTIFICATION-MIB?

DOCS-IETF-CABLE-DEVICE-NOTIFICATION-MIB is an IETF/CableLabs standard extension of the Cable Device MIB that defines control objects governing which SNMP notifications a cable modem or CMTS will send, organized by DOCSIS-defined functional event categories. It exposes separate notification-control objects for cable modems (docsDevCmNotifControl) and cable modem termination systems (docsDevCmtsNotifControl), alongside a shared general control (docsDevNotifControl), letting an operator enable or disable trap generation per functional category rather than defining new fault data itself. In monitoring terms this MIB governs the software behavior of the alerting subsystem itself: an admin configures it to ensure that hardware and service fault events, as defined elsewhere in DOCSIS event tables, actually get pushed to the management station as traps rather than silently logged. It is explicitly built as an extension of the CABLE-DEVICE-MIB and depends on that base MIB's event/status tables for the actual condition data being notified. It is deployed across cable operator networks on both CM and CMTS equipment wherever DOCSIS event notifications need centralized, selective enabling. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the DOCS-IETF-CABLE-DEVICE-NOTIFICATION-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DOCS-IETF-CABLE-DEVICE-NOTIFICATION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • cable modem (CM)
  • cable modem termination system (CMTS)
  • vendor-neutral, standards-based DOCSIS MIB

Monitoring Examples

This module's objects (docsDevCmNotifControl, docsDevCmtsNotifControl, docsDevNotifControl) are control/configuration switches rather than data-bearing runtime counters, so the practical monitoring action is to verify these are set to enable notifications for the desired DOCSIS event categories on a modem or CMTS, then confirm traps actually arrive at the NMS when an underlying fault occurs. An admin finding docsDevCmNotifControl disabled on a modem would explain why known fault conditions never generated an alert. There is no separate data table here to poll for values; it is purely notification-enablement configuration.

What Can Be Monitored

  • cable modem notification control (per event category)
  • CMTS notification control (per event category)
  • general/global notification control status
