Description: EIA optical interface MIB for monitoring EIA-standard optical port parameters including signal levels and error counters.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is EIA-OPT-MIB?
EIA-OPT-MIB covers EIA-standard optical interface parameters, used to monitor the physical-layer health of optical (fiber) network ports on telecom or networking equipment conforming to EIA conventions. It exposes optical-domain physical layer data such as transmit/receive signal levels, laser bias current, and optical error/alarm counters for each optical port. Its central purpose is hardware status monitoring at the physical layer -- detecting a degrading laser, a weak received optical signal, or rising error counts on a fiber link before it causes a service outage -- rather than software or configuration state. It is a standards-oriented interface MIB and would typically be used alongside the standard IF-MIB (ifTable) since optical ports also appear as generic interfaces, and possibly alongside vendor-specific digital optical monitoring (DOM) extensions. It is deployed on any EIA-compliant optical networking gear, such as access/aggregation switches or transport equipment with SFP/fiber uplinks, in telecom central offices or enterprise network cores, where the EIA-OPT-MIB MIB is used to track optical port health.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in EIA-OPT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (EIA optical interface convention), applies to networking/telecom equipment with optical (fiber) ports
Monitoring Examples
An administrator polls the optical port table's transmit and receive power level objects to spot a fiber link whose received signal has degraded below a safe margin, indicating a dirty connector or a failing transceiver. Laser bias current trending upward over time on a given optical port can indicate an aging laser diode nearing end of life. Cross-referencing optical error counters with the corresponding ifIndex in the standard IF-MIB lets an operator correlate rising bit errors with observed packet loss on that link. No concrete object names were captured for this MIB in this batch, so exact OIDs should be verified against the compiled source.
What Can Be Monitored
- optical transmit power level
- optical receive power level
- laser bias current
