Category: Alarm and Event Management

Description: Defines trap notifications and alert events for desktop network management agents.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is DESKTRAP-MIB?

DESKTRAP-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB (Siemens Nixdorf 'sni' enterprise branch) defining SNMP trap notifications for desktop network management agents installed on end-user workstations. It exposes trap objects carrying agent identity, version, and event information rather than a large set of polled data tables. Its core monitoring purpose is fault and status notification: it reports desktop agent status changes, system status events, and free-text event descriptions, effectively alerting on software agent health and unexpected system state changes on managed desktops. It is a vendor-specific extension rather than built on a common IETF standard, tied to Siemens Nixdorf's desktop management agent software. It is typically deployed in enterprise desktop fleets where a management agent on each PC forwards status and fault traps to a central NMS. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the DESKTRAP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DESKTRAP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Siemens Nixdorf managed desktop PC
  • Windows desktop with SNI management agent

Monitoring Examples

A monitoring station receiving an sniTrapAgentEventName/sniTrapAgentEventText trap pair would use sniTrapDesktop to identify which workstation raised it and sniTrapTimeStr for the local event time. The sniTrapAgentStatus and sniTrapAgentSystemStatus objects indicate whether the desktop agent itself, or the underlying system, has moved into a fault or degraded state. Because this MIB is trap-oriented, there are no large polled runtime tables beyond agent identity objects like sniTrapAgentVersion and sniTrapAgentDeskInfoVersion, which are mainly used to correlate trap content with a known agent software version.

What Can Be Monitored

  • desktop agent status
  • desktop system status
  • agent/event name and description
  • agent and desktop-info version
