Category: Alarm and Event Management, Hardware and Environment, Vendor: Dell

Description: Defines trap notifications and alert events for Dell RCSG2 chassis management.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is DELLRCSG2-TRAP-MIB?

DELLRCSG2-TRAP-MIB is a Dell vendor MIB defining SNMP trap/notification objects for the RCSG2 chassis management platform (a Dell remote console/management controller generation), part of Dell's out-of-band chassis management tooling. It belongs to the fault/event category of MIBs, carrying no polled tables of its own but defining varbind objects attached to traps such as firmware/image updates, user session activity, and switch/device naming changes. For monitoring it is used almost exclusively for software and administrative status events: it reports things like firmware image updates in progress (current vs. new version), user login/session identifiers, and renaming of managed target devices or tiered switches, rather than continuous hardware sensor polling. It depends on the parent DELLRCSG2 chassis management MIB tree and the standard SNMP-NOTIFICATION-TYPE/trap framework for delivering these alerts. It is deployed in Dell blade chassis or modular chassis management environments where the RCSG2 controller sends real-time alerts to a central NMS, typically after an administrator performs a DELLRCSG2-TRAP-MIB download to load the trap definitions into that NMS.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DELLRCSG2-TRAP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Dell RCSG2 chassis management controller (blade/modular chassis)

Monitoring Examples

When a chassis administrator uploads new firmware, the device would emit a trap carrying dellrcsg2TrapObjectImageType, dellrcsg2TrapObjectImageCurrentVersion, and dellrcsg2TrapObjectImageNewVersion, letting an NMS log the exact firmware transition and flag if it doesn't match the expected version. A user-management trap would carry dellrcsg2TrapObjectUserName and dellrcsg2TrapObjectSessionIdentifier to audit who logged into the chassis controller and when. Renaming events use dellrcsg2TrapObjectTargetDeviceName and dellrcsg2TrapObjectOldTargetDeviceName so an admin can correlate a naming change with subsequent inventory changes in the NMS.

What Can Be Monitored

  • firmware image update events
  • current/new firmware version
  • user login/session activity
  • device/switch rename events
