Category: Routing Protocols, Vendor: Dell

Description: Handles routing policy and peer session management for BGP4 version 2 on Dell Networking switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is DELL-NETWORKING-BGP4-V2-MIB?

This MIB module manages Border Gateway Protocol version 4 (BGP4) routing objects for Dell Networking switches, covering peer session establishment, routing policy, and route exchange state for the BGP protocol used in large-scale IP routing. Although no sample objects were provided, a BGP4 MIB of this type typically exposes peer state (idle, connect, established, etc.), negotiated capabilities, path attributes, and route counts per peer. Its monitoring value lies in tracking BGP control-plane software health—detecting peer session flaps, unexpected state transitions, or route count anomalies that indicate routing instability—rather than hardware sensor data. It is explicitly modeled on and closely related to the standard IETF BGP4-MIB, extended/versioned for Dell's platform. It would be deployed on Dell Networking switches and routers acting as BGP speakers in data center or enterprise WAN routing environments. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the DELL-NETWORKING-BGP4-V2-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DELL-NETWORKING-BGP4-V2-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Dell Networking switch/router

Monitoring Examples

No sample objects were included for this MIB, so specific table/object names cannot be cited directly; however, based on the standard BGP4-MIB this module extends, an operator would typically poll a peer table for per-peer administrative and operational state (e.g., idle vs. established) and received/advertised route counts. A peer unexpectedly transitioning out of the established state, or a sharp drop in received routes, would signal a BGP session failure or upstream routing issue. Confirming exact object names would require consulting the actual MIB source.

What Can Be Monitored

  • BGP peer session state
  • BGP peer negotiated capabilities
  • route counts per peer
  • session state transitions

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using dellNetBgpM2PathAttrCount OID:

Select a Dell Networking switch/router (BGP4) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type dellNetBgpM2PathAttrCount into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The number of entries in the dellNetBgpM2PathAttrTable. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
