What Is DELL-NETWORKING-SMI?

DELL-NETWORKING-SMI is the Structure of Management Information module for the Dell Networking OS (used on Dell/Force10-derived switches), defining the enterprise's private OID root and registration hierarchy. It contains no manageable data objects of its own; it exists purely to declare the top-level object identifiers under which all functional Dell Networking MIB modules (interfaces, chassis, environment, routing) register their tables. Every functional Dell Networking OS object, from interface counters to environmental sensors, is registered beneath a DELL-NETWORKING-SMI OID, giving the vendor's entire MIB suite a single consistent root. As a pure SMI/root module it has no hardware or software status objects to poll directly, so it plays no role in reporting uptime, temperature, CPU/memory load, or fan/power status by itself. It is a foundational dependency required by every other Dell Networking OS MIB module. It is deployed as a prerequisite compile-time MIB wherever Dell Networking OS switches (e.g. Dell PowerSwitch/Force10 S-series and Z-series) are managed via SNMP.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DELL-NETWORKING-SMI. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Dell PowerSwitch Z9964 Series (2025) — Broadcom Tomahawk-6 based AI fabric switch, 102.4 Tbps
  • Dell PowerSwitch SN5600 (2024) — 800 Gbps NVIDIA Spectrum-X Ethernet switch for AI workloads

Monitoring Examples

DELL-NETWORKING-SMI has no sample objects because it is a pure SMI root module; it defines only the enterprise OID arc that dependent Dell Networking MIBs (covering chassis, environment sensors, and interface status) attach their object trees to. There is no standalone monitoring scenario — it must be loaded first so that OIDs in the functional Dell Networking MIBs resolve correctly.

NOTE WELL: support for mibs in the dellNetExperiment subtree will be deleted when a permanent object identifier assignment is made.
