Description: Manages link topology and view information for DCP optical networking equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is DCP-LINKVIEW-MIB?

DCP-LINKVIEW-MIB is Smartoptics' enterprise-specific MIB for the DCP optical platform, exposing per-link optical topology and fiber-quality measurements rather than alarms directly. It provides a table of monitored links describing the local host/port name and status along with detailed physical-layer optical metrics: power level, fiber loss, attenuation, fiber length, dispersion, and fiber type. It is squarely a hardware-status monitoring MIB — administrators track optical power and fiber loss trends to catch a degrading fiber, connector, or transceiver before it triggers a hard failure, complementing DCP-ALARM-MIB's threshold-crossing alarms. It has an implicit dependency on DCP-ALARM-MIB, since the fiber quality metrics here typically drive the alarms reported there. Typical deployment is a Smartoptics DCP DWDM/optical transport node where an operator tracks fiber health across many links in a metro or long-haul optical network. Engineers can download the DCP-LINKVIEW-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DCP-LINKVIEW-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Smartoptics DCP optical transport platform

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll dcpLinkviewTable/dcpLinkviewEntry (indexed by dcpLinkviewIndex) for dcpLinkviewLocalHostname and dcpLinkviewLocalStatus to confirm each optical link is up, then track dcpLinkviewLocalPower and dcpLinkviewFiberLoss/dcpLinkviewFiberAttenuation over time. A steady rise in dcpLinkviewFiberLoss or a drop in dcpLinkviewLocalPower for a given dcpLinkviewFiberType would flag a degrading fiber plant or connector before the link actually fails, and dcpLinkviewFiberLength/dcpLinkviewFiberDispersion help correlate the problem to a specific span.

What Can Be Monitored

  • optical link status
  • local optical power
  • fiber loss/attenuation
  • fiber length

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using dcpLinkviewFiberUtilization OID:

Select a Smartoptics DCP optical transport platform (fiber/link quality) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type dcpLinkviewFiberUtilization into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the wavelength utilization of the system in units of %. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if utilization approaches its capacity limit, since sustained high utilization often precedes congestion or degraded performance. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
