Description: Handles Generic Framing Procedure (GFP) encapsulation on Cyan optical transport equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CYAN-GFP-MIB?

CYAN-GFP-MIB is a MIB module from Cyan Inc., an optical transport/packet-optical networking vendor later acquired by Ciena, for managing Generic Framing Procedure (GFP) encapsulation on optical transport equipment. It exposes a GFP table keyed by shelf, module, and GFP interface identifiers, covering configuration such as accepted payload type/FCS, admin state, auto-in-service soak timer, and fault indicators like client signal fail and discard-error-frames counts. It is used to monitor both configuration and fault/hardware status of GFP-mapped optical interfaces, tracking administrative state, detecting client signal failures, and counting discarded frames due to errors, which together reveal degrading optical transport links or misconfigured payload mappings. It is layered under the device's shelf/module inventory conventions and is used alongside other Cyan optical transport MIBs since GFP is an encapsulation layer, not a full protocol stack on its own. It was deployed on Cyan Z-Series packet-optical transport platforms used by carriers and enterprises for converged optical/Ethernet transport. Engineers can download the CYAN-GFP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CYAN-GFP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cyan Z-Series packet-optical transport platform

Monitoring Examples

An operator polling cyanGFPTable (indexed by cyanGFPShelfId, cyanGFPModuleId, cyanGFPGFPId) can check cyanGFPAdminState to confirm a GFP interface is enabled, and watch cyanGFPClientSignalFail to detect when the client-side signal feeding the GFP mapper has failed. A rising cyanGFPDiscardErrorFrames counter combined with a stable cyanGFPAcceptedPayloadType configuration would point to transmission errors on the optical path rather than a configuration mismatch. Checking cyanGFPAutoinserviceSoakTimeSec helps confirm how long the system waits before automatically bringing a recovered GFP link back into service.

What Can Be Monitored

  • GFP interface administrative state
  • client signal fail status
  • discarded/error frame counts
  • accepted payload type/FCS configuration
  • auto-in-service soak timer
