Category: Optical and WDM, Vendor: Cisco ONS/Cerent
Description: Extends standard interface management with Cisco/Cerent ONS-specific objects for optical transport interface monitoring.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CERENT-IF-EXT-MIB?
CERENT-IF-EXT-MIB extends standard interface management with Cisco/Cerent-specific objects for optical transport network elements (Cerent, acquired by Cisco, made SONET/SDH optical transport systems now sold as Cisco ONS platforms). It supplements the standard IF-MIB ifTable with a parallel extension table adding pre-service alarm suppression control and configurable/current soak-time parameters per interface, used to hold newly-activated or recovering optical interfaces in a quiet period before alarms are raised. This MIB is used to monitor the fault-management configuration and status of optical interfaces: whether alarm suppression is active on a given interface and how far into its soak (stabilization) period it currently is, which directly affects whether a flapping or newly-turned-up port will generate false alarms. It explicitly depends on and extends the standard IETF IF-MIB (ifTable/ifIndex) since its extension table is indexed against standard interface entries. It is deployed on Cisco ONS/Cerent optical transport network elements in service-provider and enterprise optical transport networks. Engineers can download the CERENT-IF-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CERENT-IF-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco ONS / Cerent optical transport network element
Monitoring Examples
An operator queries cerentIfExtTable (indexed like ifTable) to check cerentIfExtPreServiceAlarmSuppression on a newly provisioned optical port and compares cerentIfExtCurrentSoakTime against cerentIfExtConfiguredSoakTime to see how much longer alarm suppression will remain active before the port starts reporting faults normally. If cerentIfExtCurrentSoakTime never advances toward the configured value, it suggests the interface keeps flapping and resetting its soak timer, indicating an unstable optical link rather than a simple bring-up delay. This lets NOC staff distinguish expected new-circuit-settling behavior from a genuine recurring fault on the transport interface.
What Can Be Monitored
- per-interface alarm suppression enabled
- configured soak time
- current soak time elapsed
- interface pre-service alarm state
