Description: Manages circuit emulation module (CEM) configuration and status for Cyan optical equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CYAN-CEM-MIB?

CYAN-CEM-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from Cyan Inc. (now part of Ciena) for its packet-optical transport platforms, covering the Common Equipment Module (CEM) that houses shared shelf-level hardware functions. It exposes inventory and state data organized by shelf and module identifier, including administrative and active/standby role, LED and alarm indicators, asset tagging, and software build information. This makes it directly useful for monitoring hardware and software status of the equipment: tracking whether a module is in service or standby, its in-service soak timer, alarm/LED state, base MAC address, and the currently running software build version. It is a proprietary enterprise MIB and does not appear to lean heavily on IETF standard MIBs, instead defining its own object tree under the Cyan enterprise OID branch. It is typically deployed by network operations teams managing Cyan/Ciena optical transport shelves in metro and access network deployments. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the CYAN-CEM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CYAN-CEM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cyan (Ciena) packet-optical transport shelf
  • Common Equipment Module (CEM) hardware

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll cyanCemTable/cyanCemEntry indexed by cyanCemShelfId and cyanCemCemId to check cyanCemActiveLed and cyanCemAlarmLed for a red alarm state, or read cyanCemActivestandbyState to confirm the standby CEM has not unexpectedly taken over. Checking cyanCemAdminState against an unexpected 'out of service' value combined with a still-running cyanCemAutoinserviceSoakTimeSec would reveal a module stuck in its soak period after insertion. cyanCemCurrCyanSwBuildVersions can be compared across shelves to catch a card still running an outdated firmware build.

What Can Be Monitored

  • module admin/active-standby state
  • alarm and status LED state
  • in-service soak timer
  • base MAC address
  • asset tag
  • current software build version
