What Is CTRON-SMARTTRUNK-MIB?

CTRON-SMARTTRUNK-MIB is a Cabletron Systems enterprise MIB that models Smart TRUNK link aggregation on Cabletron switches, defining the configuration and diagnostic data for grouping multiple physical interfaces into a single logical trunk. It exposes a global enable flag (ctTrunkGlobalStatus), a trunk configuration table (ctTrunkConfigTable, indexed by ctTrunkIndex) holding the trunk name, trunking protocol (decHuntGroup or none), load-balancing algorithm, associated ifIndex, and row-creation status, plus a read-only connection table (ctTrunkConnectionTable) mapping each local member port to its remote peer's ifIndex for verifying correct trunk wiring. An optional flow-diagnostic table (ctTrunkFlowDiagnosticTable) counts installed flows per port for devices that load-balance on a flow basis. This is useful for confirming that a Smart TRUNK's member ports are correctly cross-connected and that load is being distributed as configured, and it depends on the standard Interfaces (IF-MIB) table since each trunk also appears as a row there. It is deployed on Cabletron/Enterasys switches using proprietary Smart TRUNK link aggregation instead of (or alongside) standard 802.3ad LACP; administrators can download the CTRON-SMARTTRUNK-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser for that purpose.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CTRON-SMARTTRUNK-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cabletron Systems (later Enterasys) managed switches supporting Smart TRUNK link aggregation

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls ctTrunkConfigTable to confirm ctTrunkRowStatus is active and ctTrunkConfigLoadBalance is set as intended, then cross-checks ctTrunkConnectionTable's ctTrunkPortRemoteIfIndex for each member port; a value of 0 in that field indicates no remote interface was detected on that link, flagging a miswired or down trunk member.

What Can Be Monitored

  • trunk configuration table entries
  • trunk member port remote-interface mapping
  • trunk row/entry status
  • load-balancing algorithm setting
  • per-port installed-flow counters

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using ctTrunkFlowDiagnosticInstalledFlows OID:

Select a Cabletron/Enterasys switch (Smart TRUNK link aggregation) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type ctTrunkFlowDiagnosticInstalledFlows into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports a counter of the flows installed on this port since it was first operational. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
