Category: VLAN and Bridging, Vendor: 3Com

Description: Provides Chipcom (3Com) extensions to IEEE 802.1D bridging management for campus network switching equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CHIPDOT1D-MIB?

CHIPDOT1D-MIB provides Chipcom (later 3Com) vendor extensions to the standard IEEE 802.1D bridging MIB, used on Chipcom/3Com modular hub and campus switching equipment. It extends the base dot1dBase objects (bridge address, port count, port table) with a vendor-specific 'bridge side switch mode' object and other Chipcom-specific bridging parameters, while also exposing standard bridge port statistics like delay-exceeded and MTU-exceeded discard counters. Its monitoring value lies in bridge port health: rising dot1dBasePortDelayExceededDiscards or dot1dBasePortMtuExceededDiscards on a port indicates frames being dropped due to excessive bridging delay or oversized frames, useful for spotting a misbehaving or overloaded bridge port. It explicitly depends on and extends the standard IETF BRIDGE-MIB (RFC 1493/4188) dot1dBase objects. It is deployed on legacy Chipcom/3Com Ethernet hub and switch chassis in campus LAN environments, and a CHIPDOT1D-MIB download supplies the object definitions needed to poll these bridge port counters.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CHIPDOT1D-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Chipcom/3Com modular hub and switch

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll dot1dBasePortTable/dot1dBasePortEntry, keyed by dot1dBasePort, cross-referencing dot1dBasePortIfIndex to the underlying interface, and watch dot1dBasePortDelayExceededDiscards and dot1dBasePortMtuExceededDiscards for rising counts that indicate a specific bridge port dropping frames. chipBridgeSideSwitchMode would be checked to confirm which switching mode is active on that bridge side. dot1dStpProtocolSpecification confirms which spanning-tree variant the bridge is running.

What Can Be Monitored

  • bridge port delay-exceeded discards
  • bridge port MTU-exceeded discards
  • bridge switch mode
  • spanning-tree protocol in use
  • bridge port-to-interface mapping
