Category: Vendor: HP/HPE, Wireless and WLAN
Description: Provides diagnostic tool objects including ping and trace operations on Colubris/HP wireless devices.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is COLUBRIS-TOOLS-MIB?
COLUBRIS-TOOLS-MIB is a vendor-specific SNMP module for Colubris Networks (later HP MSM) wireless devices that exposes remote diagnostic tooling rather than passive statistics. It defines configuration objects for running network trace/capture operations, such as selecting the interface, capture destination, filter, timeout, packet count, and packet size, plus a status object and notification for completed captures. Its monitoring value lies in software-level diagnostic status: administrators configure and then poll traceCaptureStatus to know whether a remotely-triggered packet trace has completed, and can subscribe to the associated notification for asynchronous completion alerts, rather than continuously monitoring hardware health counters. It is a self-contained enterprise MIB used alongside standard SNMP trap delivery mechanisms. It is typically deployed by network operations teams for remote troubleshooting of connectivity issues on deployed wireless access points without needing local console access. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the COLUBRIS-TOOLS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in COLUBRIS-TOOLS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Colubris/HP wireless access point
- Colubris/HP wireless LAN controller
Monitoring Examples
An operator would set traceInterface, traceCaptureFilter, traceNumberOfPackets, and tracePacketSize, then enable traceNotificationEnabled before triggering a capture, and poll traceCaptureStatus to see when it transitions to a completed or failed state. If traceCaptureDestinationURL points to a remote file server, a stuck or failed status combined with a timeout at traceTimeout would indicate the capture could not reach that destination. The colubrisToolsMIBNotifications group fires a trap when the capture finishes, letting a management station avoid polling loops for long captures.
What Can Be Monitored
- remote packet capture status
- capture interface and filter configuration
- capture destination reachability
- capture completion notification
- capture timeout/packet count settings
