Last Updated: 2006-05-23

Category: Vendor: HP/HPE, Wireless and WLAN

Description: Reports per-client and aggregate bandwidth usage statistics on Colubris/HP wireless networks.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is COLUBRIS-USAGE-INFORMATION-MIB?

This Colubris (HP) MIB reports system-level resource usage on the access point, covering uptime, CPU load averages, instantaneous/short-interval CPU usage, and RAM utilization (total, free, buffered, cached). This is a core hardware/software health MIB, directly exposing the kinds of metrics - uptime, CPU load averages, and memory statistics - that administrators use to detect an overloaded or memory-starved device before it degrades service. Because it mirrors familiar Unix-style load-average and memory statistics, it's effectively the Colubris analog of what HOST-RESOURCES-MIB or a Linux /proc-based monitoring agent would expose. It has no direct technical dependency on other IETF MIBs but conceptually parallels HOST-RESOURCES-MIB semantics. It's deployed on Colubris/HP access points in any environment where capacity/performance monitoring of the AP's embedded OS is required. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the COLUBRIS-USAGE-INFORMATION-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in COLUBRIS-USAGE-INFORMATION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Colubris/HP wireless access point

Monitoring Examples

An admin polls coUsInfoCpuUseNow alongside coUsInfoLoadAverage1Min/5Min/15Min to catch a CPU spike or sustained high load that could indicate a runaway process or attack such as a flood of association requests. coUsInfoRamFree and coUsInfoRamCached are checked together to distinguish genuinely low memory from memory legitimately held in cache, while coUsInfoUpTime confirms whether the AP has recently rebooted, which would reset all these counters and might explain a gap in historical data.

What Can Be Monitored

  • system uptime
  • CPU load average (1/5/15 min)
  • instantaneous CPU usage
  • total/free RAM
  • buffered/cached RAM

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using coUsInfoUpTime OID:

Select a Colubris/HP wireless access point (legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type coUsInfoUpTime into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports the elapsed time after the device starts up. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a TimeTicks-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is unexpectedly low (e.g. under 10 minutes), since that indicates a recent, possibly unplanned, reboot or restart. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
