Category: Vendor: HP/HPE, Wireless and WLAN

Description: Manages Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) neighbor information on Colubris/HP wireless devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is COLUBRIS-CDP-MIB?

COLUBRIS-CDP-MIB is a Colubris Networks (later acquired by HP) enterprise MIB implementing Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) neighbor discovery on Colubris/HP wireless access points and controllers. It exposes a neighbor-cache table containing discovered adjacent devices' addresses, capabilities, platform type, software version, and port identifiers, along with a configurable global CDP advertisement interval. Its monitoring value is topology/software status rather than sensor hardware: it lets an administrator confirm which neighboring devices a wireless AP or controller has discovered, verify their advertised software version and capabilities, and detect stale entries via time-to-live expiration, which can reveal a disconnected or misbehaving neighbor. As a CDP implementation it functionally parallels Cisco's own CDP MIB conventions, though it is a self-contained Colubris-specific module. It is deployed on Colubris/HP wireless access points and WLAN controllers in mixed-vendor networks where CDP neighbor visibility aids topology mapping. Engineers can download the COLUBRIS-CDP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in COLUBRIS-CDP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Colubris/HP wireless access point or WLAN controller

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll coCdpCacheTable/coCdpCacheEntry to read coCdpCacheDeviceId, coCdpCachePlatform, and coCdpCacheVersion for each discovered neighbor, confirming the wireless AP sees the expected upstream switch. coCdpCacheTimeToLive counting down to zero without refresh indicates the neighbor relationship has gone stale, likely due to a link or CDP process failure. coCdpGlobalMessageInterval is checked to confirm how frequently CDP advertisements are sent, which affects how quickly stale neighbors are detected.

What Can Be Monitored

  • CDP neighbor device ID and platform
  • neighbor software version
  • neighbor capabilities
  • cache entry time-to-live
  • CDP advertisement interval
