Category: RADIUS and AAA, Vendor: HP/HPE, Wireless and WLAN

Description: Manages IEEE 802.1X port-based access control authentication on Colubris/HP wireless devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is COLUBRIS-802DOT1X-ACCESS-MIB?

COLUBRIS-802DOT1X-ACCESS-MIB is a Colubris Networks (later acquired by HP) MIB implementing IEEE 802.1X port-based network access control on Colubris wireless access points/controllers. It exposes configuration for both the 802.1X PAE (Port Access Entity) system-wide behavior and the authenticator function, including timers governing the authentication exchange. Its monitoring value is chiefly software/protocol status: tracking whether re-authentication is enabled (coDot1xAuthReAuthEnabled) and its period, along with timeout/retry parameters like coDot1xAuthQuietPeriod, coDot1xAuthTxPeriod, and coDot1xAuthSuppTimeout, helps diagnose why client devices are failing or delaying 802.1X authentication onto the wireless network. It is a vendor implementation of the standard IEEE 802.1X protocol and conceptually depends on that standard's state machine model (and typically coexists with a RADIUS server referenced via coDot1xAuthServerTimeout). It is typically deployed on Colubris/HP wireless access points and controllers enforcing port-based authentication for WLAN clients. Engineers can download the COLUBRIS-802DOT1X-ACCESS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in COLUBRIS-802DOT1X-ACCESS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Colubris/HP wireless access point
  • Colubris/HP wireless LAN controller

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would check coDot1xAuthMaxReq together with coDot1xAuthServerTimeout and coDot1xAuthSuppTimeout to see how long a client authentication attempt is allowed before it's declared failed. If coDot1xAuthReAuthEnabled is true but clients are getting disconnected periodically, checking coDot1xAuthReAuthPeriod and coDot1xAuthReAuthMax would reveal whether re-authentication is being triggered too aggressively or failing repeatedly. coDot1xPaeSystemModifyKeyInterval and coDot1xPaeSystemModifyKey would be inspected to confirm the PAE system's group key rotation schedule.

What Can Be Monitored

  • 802.1X re-authentication enable/period/max
  • quiet period
  • transmit period
  • supplicant and server timeouts
  • max authentication requests
  • PAE system key modify interval
