Description: The default coded character set for input octets encountered outside a context in which the Page Description Language established the interpretation of the octets. (Input octets are presented to the interpreter through a path defined in the channel group.) This value shall be (2) if there is no default. Additional information: This object refers to PCL symbol set.

What is prtinterpreterdefaultcharsetin?

This read-write object sets the default coded character set applied to input octets that arrive outside any context where the Page Description Language itself establishes the encoding, corresponding to what the additional information calls the PCL symbol set. An admin changes this when text sent to the printer in a non-Latin script, such as Cyrillic, is rendering as garbage characters because the interpreter is defaulting to the wrong symbol set. For example, switching this from ePcsHPRoman8(2004) to ePcsISOLatinCyrillic(8) would fix Cyrillic characters that were previously displaying as Roman-8 symbols.
