Category: Vendor: Cisco Devices, Wireless and WLAN

Description: Manages Cisco WPAN (IEEE 802.15.4) wireless personal area network interfaces and mesh topology.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-WPAN-MIB?

CISCO-WPAN-MIB is a Cisco MIB for configuring and monitoring Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) interfaces based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, used in Cisco's field-area/mesh networking gear (e.g., Connected Grid Routers) for utility and IoT mesh deployments. It exposes per-interface WPAN configuration and RPL (IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-power and Lossy networks) mesh topology data, along with high-availability state for the interface. For hardware/software status monitoring, it reports cwpanIfServiceStatus and cwpanIfServiceStatusReason (is the WPAN service up, and why not if not), RPL mesh health via node/threshold counts, and high-availability failover state (cwpanIfHAState, cwpanIfHAFailureCode) reflecting the router's operational readiness. It builds on the RPL (RFC 6550) mesh routing standard, referenced explicitly in the MIB description, and complements Cisco's IF-MIB entries for the underlying WPAN interface. It is deployed in smart-grid or industrial IoT mesh networks where Cisco routers manage large numbers of 802.15.4 mesh endpoints, with the CISCO-WPAN-MIB MIB providing the SNMP interface for this monitoring.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-WPAN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Connected Grid Router / WPAN mesh gateway
  • IEEE 802.15.4 field-area network equipment

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll cwpanInterfaceTable/cwpanInterfaceEntry to check cwpanIfServiceStatus and cwpanIfServiceStatusReason, catching a WPAN radio that has silently gone out of service. cwpanIfRplTableNodes versus cwpanIfRplTableMajorThreshNodes and cwpanIfRplTableMinorThreshNodes would reveal a mesh that has shrunk below expected node counts, indicating a coverage or connectivity problem, while cwpanIfRplTableResetReason explains an unexpected RPL topology reset. cwpanIfHAState and cwpanIfHAStandbyReady would be checked to confirm a standby WPAN gateway is ready to take over if cwpanIfHAFailureCode indicates the active path has failed.

What Can Be Monitored

  • WPAN interface service status
  • RPL mesh node count
  • RPL topology reset reason
  • high-availability state
  • HA failure code
  • standby readiness
