IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring CISCO-IMAGE-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is CISCO-IMAGE-MIB?

CISCO-IMAGE-MIB manages information about the Cisco IOS software image(s) present on a device, including image identifiers and descriptive strings, and belongs to the Cisco software/configuration management area. It exposes a table of image entries describing the characteristics and capabilities of each software image installed or available on the device. This directly supports monitoring the software status of a device, since polling ciscoImageString for a given ciscoImageIndex tells an administrator exactly which IOS image and feature set is running or staged, useful for verifying version compliance and change-management audits. It has no strong dependency on other MIBs beyond general Cisco device conventions. It is typically used in enterprise and service-provider environments for software inventory and compliance tracking across a fleet of Cisco routers and switches. Engineers can download the CISCO-IMAGE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-IMAGE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco routers
  • Cisco switches running IOS

Monitoring Examples

An administrator polls ciscoImageTable (ciscoImageEntry rows indexed by ciscoImageIndex) and reads ciscoImageString to confirm the exact IOS image name and version running on a device. Comparing this value across a fleet of devices after a maintenance window quickly identifies routers that failed to pick up an intended software upgrade. An unexpected or unrecognized ciscoImageString value would flag a device running an unapproved or outdated image.

What Can Be Monitored

  • installed software image identifier
  • image version string
  • image index/count
