Category: Cisco Devices, Network Monitoring (RMON)
Description: Manages NetFlow flow collection and export on Cisco Catalyst switch ASICs for traffic visibility and accounting.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-SWITCH-NETFLOW-MIB?
CISCO-SWITCH-NETFLOW-MIB is a Cisco enterprise MIB for Layer 2/Layer 3 switches that manages NetFlow flow-record collection performed in switch ASIC hardware, used for traffic accounting, visibility, and capacity planning. It exposes objects for flow-direction type, per-direction usage thresholds and intervals, utilization percentages, and NetFlow table size (the hardware flow cache), along with threshold-exceeded notifications. Its monitoring value centers on traffic performance counters and hardware resource utilization: administrators track NetFlow table size against capacity to detect flow-cache exhaustion, and monitor usage/utilization values against configured thresholds to catch traffic spikes or resource exhaustion that could cause dropped flow records. It builds on the general NetFlow/IPFIX flow-export concept and Cisco's ASIC-based flow-table implementation rather than an IETF standard MIB. It is deployed on Cisco Catalyst switches where hardware-accelerated NetFlow is used for traffic monitoring and billing/accounting. Engineers can download the CISCO-SWITCH-NETFLOW-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-SWITCH-NETFLOW-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco Catalyst switch (hardware NetFlow-capable)
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll csnUtilizationTable/csnUtilizationEntry for csnUtilization per interface/direction and compare it against csnUsageThreshTable's csnUsageThreshold and csnUsageInterval to see if traffic is approaching a configured usage ceiling. Checking csnNetflowTableSizeTable/csnNetflowTableSizeEntry would reveal how full the hardware NetFlow cache is, which predicts flow-record drops if it nears capacity. A csnUtilization value crossing its threshold, paired with a near-full NetFlow table size, would explain missing flow data during a traffic surge.
What Can Be Monitored
- NetFlow table (flow cache) size/utilization
- per-direction traffic usage vs. threshold
- usage threshold-exceeded notifications
- flow direction type configuration
