Category: Cisco Devices, Hardware and Environment, Network Monitoring (RMON), SNMP Framework

Description: Declares agent capabilities for switch port and ASIC statistics collection on Cisco Catalyst platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-SWITCH-STATS-CAPABILITY?

This is a Cisco AGENT-CAPABILITIES module that declares which portions of the companion CISCO-SWITCH-STATS-MIB are implemented by a given Cisco Catalyst switch's SNMP agent, rather than defining any data objects itself. As a conformance/capabilities statement, it does not expose runtime monitoring data such as interface statistics, environment sensors, or performance counters directly. It exists purely to help management stations determine which switch-port and ASIC statistics groups are supported on a specific Catalyst software/hardware combination, so it has no bearing on monitoring uptime, temperature, CPU, or other live device status. It depends entirely on CISCO-SWITCH-STATS-MIB (and the AGENT-CAPABILITIES/SNMPv2-CONF framework) for its meaning. It is typically referenced by NMS tools during MIB compatibility checks rather than polled for live status. Engineers can download the CISCO-SWITCH-STATS-CAPABILITY file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-SWITCH-STATS-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Catalyst switch

Monitoring Examples

This module has no runtime data objects (sample_objects is empty) since it is an AGENT-CAPABILITIES conformance module; it only maps supported groups/variations of CISCO-SWITCH-STATS-MIB to specific Cisco product/software releases. There is no realistic monitoring scenario to describe beyond a management system consulting it to confirm which switch-stats MIB features are present before attempting to poll them.
