Category: Cisco Devices, SNMP Framework

Description: Extends SNMP target management with Cisco-specific VRF binding and source interface for trap destinations.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-SNMP-TARGET-EXT-MIB?

CISCO-SNMP-TARGET-EXT-MIB extends the standard SNMP-TARGET-MIB (RFC 3413) with Cisco-specific objects to support IPv6 notification targets, VRF-aware trap routing, and source-interface selection for outbound SNMP notifications. It belongs to Cisco's SNMP management-plane/network-management infrastructure feature area. The data it exposes is configuration-oriented: authentication address/type for targets, an extended target address table carrying interface index information, and a VRF table binding trap destinations to specific VRF route, filter, and storage settings. This MIB is primarily a configuration/management-plane MIB rather than a hardware-health MIB; it is used to verify that SNMP trap/notification delivery is correctly configured so that fault and status traps from other MIBs actually reach the management station. It explicitly extends SNMP-TARGET-MIB from RFC 3413, and it is deployed on Cisco routers and switches using VRF-aware management networks or IPv6 SNMP targets, especially in service-provider and multi-tenant environments. Engineers can download the CISCO-SNMP-TARGET-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-SNMP-TARGET-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco routers and switches (VRF-aware SNMP management)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator checks cExtSnmpTargetAddrTable/cExtSnmpTargetAddrEntry for cExtSnmpTargetAddrIntIfIndex to confirm which local interface is used to source notifications to an IPv6 target defined via cExtSnmpTargetAuthInetType/cExtSnmpTargetAuthInetAddr. The cExtSnmpTargetVrfTable/cExtSnmpTargetVrfEntry, keyed by cExtSnmpTargetVrfName, is checked for cExtSnmpTargetVrfRoute and cExtSnmpTargetVrfStatus to verify a trap destination is correctly bound to the customer's VRF. If cExtSnmpTargetVrfStatus shows the row as not active, traps destined for that VRF's NMS would silently fail to be routed.

What Can Be Monitored

  • source interface for SNMP notifications
  • IPv6 notification target address
  • VRF binding of trap destinations
  • VRF route/filter/storage status for targets
  • target address row status
