Category: Cisco Devices, Network Monitoring (RMON), SNMP Framework

Description: Declares agent capability statements for SMON (Switch Monitoring RMON extension) MIB on Cisco switch platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-SMON-CAPABILITY?

CISCO-SMON-CAPABILITY is an AGENT-CAPABILITIES module declaring which parts of the standard SMON-MIB (Switch Monitoring, an RMON extension for switched LAN segments defined in RFC 2613) a given Cisco switch platform implements. It belongs to Cisco's switching/RMON monitoring feature area. It contains only capability declarations — supported object groups and compliance variations of SMON-MIB — with no runtime data of its own. As a conformance module it exposes no hardware or software status objects directly; its role is limited to describing SMON feature support so an NMS knows which switch-monitoring statistics it can rely on. It is entirely dependent on SMON-MIB (RFC 2613) and the underlying RMON framework, and it is used by network management systems during capability discovery against Cisco Catalyst switches supporting SMON-based traffic monitoring. Engineers can download the CISCO-SMON-CAPABILITY file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-SMON-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Catalyst switches supporting SMON

Monitoring Examples

CISCO-SMON-CAPABILITY has no sample runtime objects (sample_objects is empty); it is composed of AGENT-CAPABILITIES statements referencing SMON-MIB's object groups per Cisco switch platform. There is no monitoring scenario to invent here — its sole use is a one-time capability check by an NMS to confirm SMON support before enabling switch-port RMON statistics collection.
